And you can find them on the bay at a good discount. Introduced last summer at the 2018 ICAST tackle show, Bimini Bay Outfitters made a big splash with the USA debut of their proven high-end Maxel Rage lever drag reels. But for the price, the build, and durability, they are really not a bad choice. I know a few people who either returned or sold them for that reason. Maxel makes its 10th anniversary of reel manufacture in 2013 with the introduction of its Transformer series of jigging reels, a range that quickly became a jewel in the company’s crown. The BV’s aren’t the smoothest reels (stainless gears) compared to saltigas and trinis, and the Terns are even rougher than them. I think people were expecting BV’s with a star drag and were disappointed when they found out it just wasn’t as good. At only 14 ounces, it’s easy to hold in your hands all day long with a minimum of fatigue. The heavier Maxel Rage 60H, 90N and 90 are meant to handle. The smaller 25H right and left hand models are a huge hit with the slow pitch jigging crowd looking for a powerful micro-sized outfit. Right from the get-go, even an untrained eye will realize that this is no ordinary downsized jigging reel, but a high-end piece of well-constructed machinery. The Terns are very well made but are a serious drop off from the Boss Valiants. My sample featured a black body with a gold spool and trim, and had striking good looks. I have a Boss Fury which I like but the lever drag is a PITA trying to slow pitch jig sea bass. Not sure if somethings wrong with them or people just don’t like them. The Hybrids are true multi task reels equally at home drifting for fluke, live lining for stripers, chumming. Seriously considering it now especially since The Reel Seat is a dealer. They’re called Hybrid because they combine the engineering, machining and impeccable high standards of the company’s Ocean Max lever drag reels, but in a star-drag configuration. This may be the Mac Daddy of all slow pitch jigging reels for deep water and BIG fish Maxel is leading the way with ultra deep water reels for slow pitch.
